How to Brew Coffee with an AeroPress

Want to learn how to brew coffee with an AeroPress? Follow these 6 easy steps to become a master brewer with the AeroPress.

What is an Aeropress?

An AeroPress is a simple coffee brewing gadget that allows you to quickly press hot water through coffee. While not the sexiest of coffee makers it’s lightweight, very portable, and will brew up a sweet, full bodied cup of coffee every time. The AeroPress was invented by an engineer named Alan Adler who was frustrated with the amount of time it took at make a single good cup of coffee in a drip coffee machine.

What do i need to use it?

  • AeroPress Brewer
  • AeroPress Scoop
  • Grinder
  • AeroPress Filter
  • Hot water (around 200-205°F)
  • AeroPress paddle or spoon
  • Timer

Step 1: Measure and Grind

Measure out and grind up about 17 grams of coffee, which will equate to 2 1/2 tablespoons or one AeroPress scoop. You will want to make sure to grind the coffee pretty fine, like the consistency of table salt.

Step 2: Prepare the AeroPress

In order to prep your AeroPress, you want to place the filter in the basket. Then rinse the filter out with hot water and preheat the brewer. By doing this you will be able to warm everything up and get rid of any paper flavor.

Step 3: Add Your Coffee

Attach the basket to the bottom of the brew chamber and then place this over your mug of choice.  You can then use the coffee loader or funnel that comes with your AeroPress to add in your ground coffee and remove the funnel when you are done.

Step 4: Water

When you begin to pour your water, make sure to set your timer and saturate all your grounds within 10 seconds. You will want to pour to the number 4 or about 220g of water if you decide to use a scale. Spin the chamber at the end to make sure all the coffee is saturated.

Step 5: Place the Plunger and Pause!

Once you have hit the number 4 on the chamber, stir your coffee and water mixture around and place the plunger on the brew chamber pulling up slightly to create a pressure seal. Don’t plunge quite yet!

Step 6: Plunge and Stir

When your timer hits 1:15, remove the seal and stir your coffee mixture once more. Now you can put the plunger back on and gently begin pressing down using steady pressure. You’ll want to stop as soon as you start to hear a hissing sound.

The entire process should take about 2 minutes and will generate about seven to eight ounces of coffee.

The AeroPress is super easy to clean. All you need to do is take off the basket and pop out the coffee grounds and filter. Then just clean off the rubber plunger with hot kettle water and you will be all set for your next brew.

If you are looking for a quicker and simpler way to make smaller individual batches of coffee with great bold flavor then we certainly recommend giving this method a try!
