Colombia El Carrizo comes from Kuma's farm-direct relationship with small grower Jose Daza in the coffee-growing eden of Narino. His El Carrizo farm sits at a sky-scraping 2150 meters above sea level in the Colombian Andes, alongside the semi-active Galeras volcano. This lot, and all of Daza's coffees, are 100% Caturra, a varietal known for its light, delicate mouthfeel and clean, crisp acidity.

One of the things you'll note about this particular coffee is very little bitterness, and here's why: high-grown coffees like El Carrizo contain less caffeine than other types of coffee. That's right! Caffeine in plants is a natural pest and fungal repellent, and plants grown at higher altitudes need fewer, and produce fewer, of these compounds. Since caffeine is one of the chemicals in coffee that contributes to its bitter taste, this can make a big impact on flavor. Since anything over ~1200 meters or so is considered high-grown, El Carrizo's 2150 meter elevation is almost literally miles above the rest.
