Sulawesi: Indonesia’s Best-Kept Secret

Sulawesi is a rare single origin, known only to the most fervent of coffee lovers. It’s hard to get your hands on a good Sulawesi coffee: without the name appeal of Sumatra, or Java, Sulawesi remains one of Indonesian coffee’s best-kept secrets. So when Scott, from Fundamental Coffee Company, told us he was bringing in a special new Sulawesi, we couldn’t wait to sink into the experience. Scotch, cigars, Sulawesi: three things to slow down and savor.

Also known as Celebes, Sulawesi is an island of Indonesia, amoeba-like with multiple outer peninsulas and a central core of mountains. Within the Southern highlands lies the Land of the Heavenly Kings, or Toraja: they're known for their traditional curved roofs, some of the world's oldest cave paintings, and pure coffee magic. Torajans still grow their coffee by traditional methods, and the whole community comes together to pick and process the beans.

With everything done by hand, fine Sulawesi beans have a special, hand-crafted nature. This Sulawesi Toraja is triple-picked; while most coffee from the region is sorted twice, this lot is sorted an additional time. This scrupulous procedure makes a real difference. Sulawesi coffees are distinct for their intense creaminess-- you’d almost think you added a splash of milk! The acidity in this roast is low, but dynamic, bringing out an array of notes that might get lost in other cups: you’ll taste florals, more savory notes, sweet vegetable sugars like green pepper, and fresh tobacco and spices. Deep, rich, and intense, but with all the charisma of a single origin: with this Sulawesi Toraja, Fundamental’s done it again.

With its creamy mouthfeel, rich savory profile, and a touch of floral complexity, Fundamental’s Sulawesi Toraja is one coffee secret too good not to share. Reserve your bag of this limited lot today, and find out for yourself why coffee from the Land of the Heavenly Kings is truly heaven in a cup.

Available in 12oz bags, as whole bean or freshly-ground. Bean box donates $2 of every bag purchase to the Feeding America® COVID-19 Response Fund.

★★★★★ ★★★★★ I ordered this coffee but received the Sulawesi Toraja Triple-Picked, which seems to use the same beans but is a medium-dark roast with a slightly different flavor profile (green peppers, floral, pipe tobacco). I'm not the biggest fan of dark roasts so I wasn't crazy about this coffee, but my dad, who is a dark roast lover, thought it was good. I think fans of Sumatra Mandheling coffee would like these beans as well.

★★★★★ ★★★★★ A lot of tobacco and vegetables and dirt in this one. It's not bad, just very earthy if that's your thing.

★★★★★ ★★★★★ Now and then these peppery, tobacco-like coffees are enjoyable. This one was good but I've had better. Mostly got a vegetal pepper and slight tobacco taste in what was a slightly creamy body.

★★★★★ ★★★★★ This was a surprise for us. The notes of the flavors had us off guard, and you can definitely smell the tobacco when you open the bag. However, this was our favorite coffee out of this month's sampler pack.

★★★★★ ★★★★★ In the french press, even with milk, it's like smoking a cigar, which to me, isn't a good thing. If you are a smoker, you will probably cherish this one.
