This pedigreed cup comes from Chimaltenango, Guatemala, on a high mountainside farm surrounded by a native forest preserve. The grower, Antonio Medina, is a fourth-generation coffee producer, with 20 years of experience under his belt. He was “discovered” in 2015, when he placed 8th in the Cup of Excellence, and his fine coffees have dotted the specialty coffee landscape ever since—if you’re lucky enough to snatch one of his exclusive microlots, that is. Antonio represents the pinnacle of coffee innovation and entrepreneurship in Guatemala: he plants additional shade and bird-friendly trees, composts his own fertilizer, processes his own beans in a low-waste facility right next to his home. The careful attention, high altitude, and pristine landscape all factor into this cup and its rich depth of flavor.
