Curator's Notes

If you enjoy amaretto, or nutty-caramel flavors in your coffee, look no further! Sweet and silky, Water Avenue’s El Salvador Ayutepeque is a blend of caramel apple, amaretto liqueur and sparkling cherry candy. At first sip, you’ll taste a tumble of tart apple and sweet berries, with a body that’s absolutely luscious like melted caramels. As it cools, flavors lift into a nutty, amaretto note with a finish reminiscent of cherry hard candy, cocoa, and a hint of cinnamon spice. Roasted right to the edge of light and medium, this versatile microlot showcases the crisp, yet mild profile of a fine Salvadoran microlot.

Roaster's Notes

Ayutepeque is one of the farms owned and operated by Cuatro M, one of our coffee producing partners in El Salvador. We have worked with Emilio Lopez Diaz, who manages this family business, for several years, purchasing coffees that he grows as well as coffees from the farms of his neighbors and family. This particular lot is a washed bourbon that typifies this classic salvadoran profile; sweet and balanced with notes of caramel, cocoa, red apple, and amaretto.

"This is excellent in your espresso machine. fruity and bright enough to be interesting to coffee nerds, and nutty and caramel-y enough, with low enough acidity, to appeal to a wider audience -- while also being able to hold up to milk. Great for a Cortado. "

"Nice light roast with notes of apple and caramel. I also tried it as an espresso and it works fine. "

"Moderate activity and full body, I tasted notes of toffee and cocoa. Wait until it gets a little colder and you will get the beautiful apple notes right away!"

"Interesting ... tastes like a darker roast. Would probably try again, though I prefer more fruity than nutty."

"Robust for a light roast, but with a slightly bitter aftertaste. A bit fruity as well. pour over."

"We made this using an aeropress. The description was accurate and it's pretty good. Not one of our favorites, but would buy again."

"Good, but nothing too special in the french press. "

"This was different, and okay. The Apple and cocoa played well together but the addition of caramel is where it got weird for me. Great as a cold brew, however, so smooth!"
