Guatemala Puerto Verde comes from Antigua’s Panchoy Valley, a fertile paradise and a “green door” that leads into Guatemala’s oldest coffee-growing region. The valley is a dense, tree-filled jungle, notably surrounded by three massive volcanos. Fuego, active since Mayan times, still frequently erupts (as recently as 2018!), providing a constant infusion of mineral-rich volcanic ash into the soil. For coffee, it’s nature’s perfect fertilizer.

Puerto Verde farm is owned and operated by Roberto Zelaya, a renowned name in Guatemalan specialty coffee. Scott, Fundamental’s owner and roaster, has known Roberto Zelaya and his daughter for over twenty years. Operating since the 90s, the Zelaya farms set the local standard for environmental sustainability and progressive working conditions. This cup is “Bourboncito”, a rare and newish varietal, only grown on a small section of the farm. Bourboncito, or Dwarf Bourbon, is a smaller, lower-yield mutation of Bourbon; like the prized Gesha varietal, these plants produce fewer, richer beans with amazingly clean, vibrant flavors. Here at Bean Box, we’ve never carried a Bourboncito coffee before… but judging by this roast, it definitely won’t be our last.
