Cool and rainy Cobán, known for its misty weather, may be the “Seattle” of Guatemala! Finca Santa Isabel, operated within the family since 1965, has put Cobán on the map of Guatemalan specialty coffee: thanks to his family's dedication to coffee and innovation in cultivation, processing, and irrigation techniques, Luis Valdez is a two-time Cup of Excellence winner.
This cup, his latest, is not to be missed. The flavors are mellow, lush and sparkly with sweet peaches, chocolate, and vanilla sugar cookies. The perfect companion to a foggy morning, and the ideal coffee for a dunk of your favorite pasty. So good, it leaves us misty-eyed.
This is our second year buying coffee from Luis Valdez Jr, (aka "Wincho"), who oversees two farms in Guatemala's Cobán region. This washed coffee is a mix of Caturra and Catuai, with comforting flavors like chocolate wafer, peach and vanilla.
"This one was an easy cup of coffee to drink; nothing necessarily really stood out or jumped out with flavor, but it was mild and paired well with creamer. Had a nice natural sweetness, with a mild vanilla flavor; very very mild hints of summer peach or summer fruit. "
"Unfortunately my manual grinder has mercilessly been giving me problems and finally broke. So it was ground too coarse. But nonetheless I could tell this was an interesting and tasty cup with fruit and vanilla notes. Certainly worth trying again."
"Lovely, light flavor to this one. Essence of cookies and chocolate, this would be a favorite go to for after dinner as well as a lazy morning! Highly recommend this coffee! Loved it!"
"A little light for me, but a lovely hint of peach. "
"Nice cherry-raspberry tartness and fruitiness, very good"
"This cuppa unfortunately just wasn’t for me, even though the description had me sold. A little too bright and acidic for me. I gifted this to a friend and they reported back with ‘how come you don’t like this?!’"
"Loved the raspberry hints in this one! Delicious even as it cooled down. I didn't find any hints of allspice...seemed mostly fruity but it was a great cup of coffee."
"A little to sour for my taste. And didn't get any allspice notes "
"Amazing!! I love cocoa in my coffee and raspberry is my favorite! I brewed single serve cups and couldn’t stop myself from going back for more. It wasn’t too sweet and the flavors weren’t overwhelming. "
"This is the first coffee from D&W that I had the pleasure drinking. The raspberries had a distinctive note that helped make this cup delicious. "
