Get ready: this coffee is a whopper! Slate's Brazil Sitio Pedra is my favorite coffee right now, and it won't be available much longer. When Slate's coffee buyer told me he was bringing in a Brazilian lot that tasted like malted milk balls, I knew it would be something special— and this natural-processed coffee takes nutty, chocolatey Brazilian coffee to a whole new level. Upfront, this light roast tastes clean, sweet, slightly sour, just like tart raspberries or salmonberries (a wild, summertime treat for humans— and bears— of the Pacific Northwest). The body is smooth, with a soft texture and a toffee-like nuttiness. But the finish is where this cup shines, with a lingering richness like malted chocolate. Slate has outdone themselves sourcing this sweet cup: it's a total must-try for anyone with a weakness for malted milkshakes or Whopper candies.

The aroma of the beans was heavenly and I could hardly wait to taste my first cup. But the brewed coffee was extremely disappointing. Too bitter/sour for my taste, and the weird fruity chocolate aftertaste was very unpleasant. This blend did not work for me at all. Maybe it is too complicated for my palate, especially with the added fruit. I will probably throw this bag out or give it away. I prefer a rich tasting coffee and wonder if I should have ordered a dark blend instead of medium. My new capresso machine with a burr grinder recommends less oily beans to prevent clogging, but maybe I should just commit to cleaning it more frequently - a small price to pay for a more satisfying coffee experience.
