When Caffe Ladro’s head roaster told us they’d be bringing their Papua New Guinea Baroida Estate back for the second year in a row, we were so excited. Similar to Indonesian coffee, but distinctly smooth and sweet, specialty coffee from Papua New Guinea (PNG) is something to savor—and this cup is a premier example from one of the country’s top small farms.
Perfect for a quiet morning, Caffe Ladro’s PNG Baroida Estate is the “apple” of our eye. Taken to a slightly toasty medium roast, this cup begins with sugary aromas of melted chocolate, toasted nuts, and tropical mango. Once brewed, you’ll enjoy a complex, buttery profile of lemon caramels, fruit-infused black tea, and a crisp, finishing note of fresh green apple. The juicy fruit flavors, paired with the region’s classic low-acid profile, makes this a smooth, balanced cup with an elegant demeanor.
Papua New Guinea remains one of the lesser-known coffee countries, an exotic and beautiful island nation of deep jungles and sky-scraping mountains. Its coffee industry began with the European import of Jamaican Blue Mountain beans, making it an oasis of Arabica coffee within a Robusta-dominant region. In the 1960s, when Australia still ruled over PNG, they encouraged foreign agriculturalists to develop the island’s highlands for coffee growing. A man named Ben Colbran bought Baroida Estate and became one of the first growers in the region: the farm is still owned and operated by the third generation of the family. The name “Baroida” comes from the Baroida spirit, a stubborn force of nature that—according to locals—resides in a large river rock located on the estate. Through decades of floods, the Baroida rock has remained, anchored in place, while other rocks have washed away. Since the same family has owned Baroida from the very beginning, the name seems apt!
Now is the time to secure a bag for yourself, before this small lot is gone. We love this medium roast for its juicy fruit, silky mouthfeel, and crisp, nutty balance of flavor. Reserve your bag of Caffe Ladro’s Papua New Guinea Baroida Highlands, and don’t miss your chance to experience a classic, distinctive cup from one of PNG’s finest specialty farms.
Available in 12oz, as whole bean or freshly ground. Bean Box donates $2 of every bag purchase to the Feeding America® COVID-19 Response Fund.
