Curator’s Notes: Grasshopper cookie?? It’s true: there’s a real nice minty herbal chocolate note in this year’s Winter Solstice Blend, and I just can’t get enough. With this in my mug, I’m ready for the longest night of the year – and then some! We’ve carried this bestseller for 8 years now, and it’s always a coffee highlight of my winter season. Scott McMartin, Fundamental’s owner and roaster, is passionate about dark-roasted coffee, and he combines beans like a real mixologist. This year, his seasonal blend is a mix of bold, herbal Sumatra, creamy cedary Vietnam, and sweet chocolaty Guatemala, for a profile that’s toasty, spicy, sweet, and rather elegant. I’m loving this one in drip or a french press, and those nice creamy, minty chocolate notes are just sublime with a splash of cream or, if you’re in the party mood, Bailey’s or peppermint schnapps. The roast this year is more of a medium-dark, just on the edge of dark, which is just perfect to showcase all those nuanced flavors without a lot of charcoal notes.
