What do we love about this cup? The body is smooth, silky, and substantial. The flavors are distinct, clean, and juicy, with notes of tropical fruit, tangerine, kiwi, watermelon, fruit leather. A light jasmine tea adds floral complexity, and the sweetness of raw cane sugar, or panela, anchors it all together. The finish is like sweet dulce de leche, with the flavor just melting away. This cup is an amazing example of the very pinnacle of Colombian coffee. Mikava Gesha Natural won this year’s COE competition with a record-breaking score of 92.71. In order to obtain a score this high, a coffee has to excel in a variety of different taste categories: body, sweetness, acidity, balance. But it also has to have that x-factor, the culinary “bliss-point”, where the overall harmony of flavor just brings you back, again and again.

The icing on the cake? The story of this tremendous cup begins in our backyard. Award-winning grower Paul Kevin Doyle begin his career in the 1980s, in Portland Oregon, a schoolteacher-turned-roaster. He built his first espresso cart by hand; now, decades later, he hand-grows the very coffees—fruity, silky, and sweet—that made him fall in love with coffee. His Gesha program is his pride and joy: he personally grew each tree from a small seedling, transplanting them into the soil himself. In this silky, smooth, dynamic cup, his hard work is more than evident— it shines!
