Curator's Notes

Meaning “togetherness” in Swahili, Muungano coop promotes gender equality, ethnic harmony, AND makes a great cup! Specialty coffee from Congo, like this one, is a luxury: we taste syrupy apricot sprinkled with sugar and spice.

Roaster's Notes

Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Kivu, near the borders of Rwanda and Burundi, The Muungano Co-op is comprised of nearly 4400 members, about half of which are women. Brought to us through Atlas Coffee Importers, this coffee was chosen by Lizzie Johnson for use in the United States Barista Championship this year at the annual Specialty Coffee Association Expo in Seattle.

"Pretty smooth, kinda sweet, with a little bit of a citrus finish. Will probably buy it again."

"It makes for a very heavy pour over. Almost syrup-like texture. Starts off a bit heavy-handed with bitter and heavy flavors. but eventually ends with a smoother sweeter aftertaste that lingers and lingers."

"If you like a little citrus zest with your chocolate, you'll love this cup. I felt the tasting notes were pretty spot on. Sweet & tangy on the front, like a peachy/apricot blend and finishes off with a little fresh cacao powder. Brewed on chemex."
