Brand new from Kuma Coffee, Rwanda Dukunde Kawa is an homage to homemade pancakes and pure, sweet maple syrup. While brewing, this light roast smells toasty, with aromatic hints of nutty rooibos tea. In the cup, you’ll taste the sweetness of apricot, plum, and black cherry compote, with a hint of coca-cola in the molasses-like body. The finish is pure maple syrup, with a brown-sugar sparkle that lingers in your mouth like candy.
This fresh crop Rwandan comes from Mbilima washing station, part of the organic Dukunde Kawa Cooperative. Dukunde Kawa, which means “love coffee” in Rwanda’s Kinyarwanda language, has received top marks at Rwandan Cup of Excellence in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018— a shining star of Rwanda’s specialty coffee scene. This cup is a fantastic example of fine Rwandan coffee, the best of which showcase an elegant, tea-like depth, a woodsy complexity and a mellow, clean profile of fruit and chocolate. When we first tried this cup, the layers of flavor delighted the whole team; when everyone went back for a second mug, we knew we had a winner.
Trust me: you’ll “Rwanda” get yourself a taste of this limited lot. Reserve a bag of Kuma Coffee’s freshly-roasted Rwanda Dukunde Kawa today, and enjoy the rich, sweet flavor of maple syrup in your mug… just don’t pour it over your pancakes!
