Curator's Notes

The Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea are known for their wild and rugged landcape. Like a diamond in the rough, this natural process lot really shines — dazzling notes of cotton candy grape add to the carnival of sweet fruit flavors.

Roaster's Notes

PAPUA NEW GUINEA LAHAMENEGU RED MOUNTAIN NATURAL About the Coffee This lot comes from the Lahamenegu Wet Mill and Volcafe PNG. Red Mountain is a regional blend of coffees from 20 small to mid-sized farmers from the small town of Goroka, the capital of the Eastern Highlands Province. It always feels like springtime in Goroka. With ample rainfall most of the year, the mild climate helps cultivate quality coffee on the slopes of the region’s high mountains at 1600masl. The Eastern Highlands are a lot more wild and rugged than the west. With over 94% of the population engaged in agricultural activity farming is the way of life. And the economic backbone of the region is founded on coffee production and export. This Red Mountain lot is unique in a few ways. Firstly, it’s a natural coffee from an origin known for its preference for washed processing. Cherry was delivered to the Lahamenegu Wet Mill, sorted for quality, then dry processed and turned over the course of six weeks. Lahamenegu also specializes in more esoteric processes such as honey and innovative fermentations. Secondly, its cup quality sets it apart from most PNG coffee. The blend features a heavy body that’s signature to coffee from PNG, with grape, plum, and pomegranate flavors highlighted by medium acidity and a heavy body. "I made this one as a cold brew and the flavor profiles were spot on. Especially leading forward with the cotton candy grapes. So it is very sweet. I will try my next cup with half and half to mellow the sweetness just a bit. Not your typical morning cup. of joe. Glad I had a pour over of Uganda Mountain Harvest right beside it to counter the dazzling fruitiness of the Papua New Guinea . All in all two good cups to enjoy this morning."

"I've only had four subscription boxes so far, but this coffee is my favorite so far. It is very grape-y, which could be off putting to some, but the balance of flavors nd roast is perfect for me. "

"Caffeine: Medium; Grind Level: 40 (Breville Smart Pro Grinder); Settings: Gold Cup w/ 28 oz. water (Breville Precision Brewer); Review: Beans are legitimately gorgeous. They have a nice mild sweet smell, I guess in the direction of cotton candy, but maybe more plum. Sweet tasting, again in the direction of cotton candy/plum, but the immediate tannin bomb really stood out. It leaves you with a sweet, dry mouth that isn't the most appealing aftertaste. It's really similar to the Shantawene, and I would say that this isn't an ideal choice for a morning cup. Thin bodied, medium-high in caffeine. I bet this would make for a pretty decent cold brew (black or with half and half) on a hot day. "

"Definitely my favorite from my last subscription box. It's got the perfect amount of sweetness and fruit flavor without being too acidic. Was good enough to order a whole additional bag!"
