Tony's 50th Anniversary Blend is comprised of Ethiopian and Central American beans, with organic, fair-trade, and shade-grown certifications, to honor Tony's long history as one of the country's first organic, fair trade roasters. Tony's Coffee was originally called "Tony Campbell's Tea and Spices", first established in Bellingham, WA: The Hippie Mecca of the West, according to a 1971 article in the Seattle Times. (Just for reference, 1971 was also the year the first Starbucks opened.) Early espresso joints like Tony's represented the very beginning of the movement we now call the "third wave" of coffee— a focus on transparency, quality, and coffee's individual, origin-level characteristics. Fifty years later, Tony's Coffee would have made its original owner proud: they've never given up on those early commitments. As of this year, their operations are fully carbon neutral and, by 2030, their goal is to offset all of their carbon emissions from 1971 to the present. Additionally, Tony's just won Roast Magazine's 2021 Roaster of the Year award, an honor that recognizes their fantastic coffees and their dedication to making the world of specialty coffee a better place.
