Deep in Ethiopia’s Jimma Zone, the farmers of Genji Challa have built a reputation for producing exceptional coffee from some of the country’s ideal coffee-growing land. The Nano Challa Cooperative was founded with a simple ambition—“we’ll do better than the rest of Challa”—and has grown from just 60 farmers to more than 600 members across five kebeles. Through investment in washing stations, training, and improved farming practices, the cooperative has transformed coffee into a more sustainable source of income for its members. Nano Challa’s story is also one of farmers taking greater ownership of the quality and value of their coffee. The cooperative has invested in farmer training, cherry collection, and processing infrastructure, giving producers more control over how their coffee is prepared and marketed. That focus on quality has helped Nano Challa become a standout among the cooperatives in the Challa area, while creating better opportunities for the farmers and communities behind the coffee. This washed lot comes from smallholder farmers in the Agaro Gera community, with coffee grown at 1,900–2,200 meters above sea level. We roast it medium-light to highlight its bright, juicy character, with notes of kiwi berry and white nectarine. The cup is clean and lively, offering a fresh expression of the high-elevation coffees of western Ethiopia.
