Tastes Like: Pumpkin Spice, Bourbon, Chocolate

Curator’s Notes: Whiskey lovers, this one’s for you! Last year, we introduced our first exclusive, pumpkin spice barrel-aged coffee for October and it was so wildly popular that I couldn’t wait to do it again. The wait is over and it’s officially back! To make this coffee, we paired a chocolate-forward Colombian microlot with the sugary, spicy notes from Southern Tier’s seasonal “Pumking” Pumpkin Whiskey barrel. After aging for two weeks, the resulting beans contain no alcohol, but you’ll taste syrupy, creamy notes of bourbon caramel, sweet spiced milk chocolate, and a hint of roasty oak in every sip. If you’ve never tried a barrel-aged coffee before, don’t be scared – the bourbon notes are mellow, and they blend with the coffee flavors instead of overwhelming them. For me, it tastes like one of those chocolate truffles with alcohol inside – the perfect after-dinner cup. This medium roast is great by itself, or you can dive into the spirit (ha!) with a craft-cocktail take on pumpkin spice: just add brown sugar, a cinnamon stick, and a dollop of whipped cream. YUM. This unique coffee was created in collaboration with our friends at Middle Fork Roasters, whose impeccable roasting style results in richly complex, beautiful Colombian – the barrel-aging process adds a layer of flavor that just “raises the bar” (see what I did there??). I wish we could have this coffee available throughout the season, but because of the size of the barrels, we can only make so much. When we sell out of this one, it’s gone, so don’t wait.
