Colombian? Check. Dark roast? Check. Organic, rainforest alliance, and roasted responsibly? Triple-check! Colombia Excelso is the newest offering from our friends at Middle Fork Roasters. We love Middle Fork for their artisan take on darker roasting, and the classic profile of this Colombian made it an instant hit in the Beanery. The beans are roasted just to the edge of dark, with a deep, chocolate-chip color and the perfect glaze of oil. The flavor profile is lower acidity, with a sweet and smooth body of caramel and sugar cane. Mellow tones of black cherry and red currant linger in the background, leading into a finish that tastes toasty, but not burnt. Coffees like these are “goldilocks” roasts: everything about them is just right!
Colombia Excelso is produced in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a range of mountains that runs along the "Carribbean Coast" of Northern Colombia. This area is exceptionally well-preserved, hosting a variety of national parks and protected forests, as well as the Lost City of Teyuna, an ancient site that dates back to 800 CE. It's also Colombia’s main organic coffee-growing region: most growers here have ancestral ties to the land, and their agricultural practices are designed to honor and preserve it. This coffee is a natural fit for Middle Fork Roasters, whose ethical, community-driven focus dovetails perfectly with the bigger picture of what organic and rainforest alliance certifications represent.
As a fantastic example of dark roasted, responsibly-sourced artisan coffee, Middle Fork’s Colombia Excelso Organic is a win-win… one sip, and it’ll win you over as well! We love the traditional, low-acid profile of sugar cane, caramel, and dark fruit. But like all microlots, this roast won’t last forever. Reserve your bag today, and fill your kitchen with the bold, smooth taste of classic Colombian coffee.
