Fundamental sources this coffee directly from the Hingakawa cooperative, a group of 961 women producers in the mountains of Northern Rwanda. Hingakawa, a chant and a mantra, means, "let's grow coffee!" The group was founded in 2004, 10 years after the Rwandan civil war, a tragic period for the country that left many survivors scrambling to rebuild their homes, communities, and futures. Hingakawa was the first women's association of its kind in Rwanda, reinventing the traditional, male-dominated agricultural industry. Since its inception, the cooperative has become synonymous with the very pinnacle of high-quality Rwandan coffee, grown in the Gakenke district at 1700-1900 meters. Their coffees have appeared multiple times in Cup of Excellence competitions, and have played a pivotal role in Rwanda's triumphant return to the specialty coffee world.
