Today, I'm enjoying their big, sweet Burundi Yandaro, a fantastic microlot from the secret garden of African coffee. This light roast is a caramel apple in a mug, with a bite of tart green apple in the front and a decadent, molasses-caramel in the finish, a hint of tamarind spice. But unlike other coffees with tart profiles, this one stays sweet, mellow, soft as cantaloupe melon and as rich as butterscotch candy. I don't think I've ever had a coffee from Burundi with this depth of flavor, but it's no wonder: Yandaro washing station is *the* place in Burundi to find distinctive, high-scoring microlots like this one. Yandaro is located in Kayanza, Burundi's top growing region — and the spot where the Nile River originates! These little beans were washed in that very water. Amazing. Coffees from Yandaro and its sister stations have placed in several recent Cup of Excellence Competitions, including multiple top prizes with cupping scores exceeding 90 points (super-rare!). With coffees like this one, Yandaro showcases the massive potential of specialty coffee from Burundi, where most farms are still small, family-run affairs of only 250-300 trees each. Yandaro Mill is also Rainforest Alliance Certified, utilizes primarily solar power, and all their coffee waste is turned into organic fertilizer and distributed back to member farms.
