Operations Director, Wife, Plant and Bunny Mom • Seattle, WA
Mornings filled with sunshine, rabbits, and the care and feeding of plants, pets, and herself.
“Beakfast is always a struggle between time and health.”
§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
I usually head to bed around 11pm and generally fall asleep within 10 minutes. In the winter I'll sleep until I absolutely HAVE to wake up or I'll be late to work (7:30am). During the summer I hate the idea of wasting any precious sunshine, so I'll often wake up around 6am.
§ What do you dream about?
Unfortunately, all my worry and stress comes to me in my dreams. But, if I'm having a good dream, it's probably about houseplants or a dream in which I speak Korean!
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
Peek out the window to see if the sun is shining, check my Instagram, and snuggle my bunny rabbit Meep (she waits for me to wake up then meets me as soon as I get out of bed!)
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
Listening to upbeat music, and (ok this might sound silly....) opening up the blinds for my houseplants! I have more than 40 houseplants in my small 500sq foot apartment, and checking on them each morning, looking for new growth, watering them, and just appreciating their existence and beauty really starts my morning off right.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
I'm choosing 2 possessions: My sun-lamp alarm, and my cell phone. The alarm has a sunrise effect that begins 30 minutes before my alarm goes off, and it always tricks me into think it'll be a gorgeous day! Then (I live in Seattle... chances are it's not sunny!) my cell phone helps me get started with the previously mentioned upbeat music.
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
My husband, Kevin, and my bunny rabbit Meep! And did I mention I have a lot of houseplants too?
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
This one is always a struggle between time and health. If I'm not in a rush, I like to eat pumpkin granola, or (my current favorite) egg and avocado toast! If I AM in a rush, I pick up a breakfast sandwich from a nearby cafe, or - worse- don't eat at all. Brunch on the weekends I'll be eating Eggs Benedict - yummm!
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
During the week I drink a lot of black coffee brewed with a Chemex. My favorite roasters are Velton's Coffee Roasting Company and Bluebeard Coffee Roasters. They are so great at developing roasts that take you on a ride: from fruity, to chocolaty, to a smooth finish without any cream or sugar. During the weekend, I'll pull shots from my own espresso machine, or I'll have a macchiato from a favorite cafe.
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
More time. Ideally, I'd spend a full hour either at a cafe or - if it's nice - on a bench by the canal. I would just people-watch/read/draw/daydream/reflect before I headed off to a productive day at work.
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
It is usually noon or 1pm before I realize it's no longer morning. I'd say I feel like it ends when I'm headed off to lunch.
