Before work mode, food blogger Haley Davis starts her mornings screenless as part of her strict 12 hour tech-free routine.
“I don't often remember my dreams, except around the full moon - then I have really vivid, strange dreams.”
§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
I do my best to get to bed anytime between 10-11, and I wake up pretty consistently at 7 or 7:30.
§ What do you dream about?
I'm a pretty heavy sleeper, so I don't often remember my dreams, except around the full moon - then I have really vivid, strange dreams.
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
I take a multivitamin and make my bed.
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
I have a "screenless" policy for one hour before bed and one hour after waking. So I make my coffee, eat breakfast, and read for about 30 minutes before I do anything else in my day. It makes me feel way more sane and human to start the day this way.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
My french press. It makes the best coffee and it slows me down in a good way.
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
I am usually alone in the mornings (and I generally prefer to be.)
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
It varies, but right now I have gotten in the habit of eating a banana with almond butter while I drink my coffee, and then making a smoothie about an hour later when I feel hungry.
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
I like very dark roast coffee, and I usually make it in my french press. Although, occasionally I pull out my moka and make it that way.
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
I'd like to find more time to take walks in the morning, but I find that my mind kicks into gear and my focus shifts to work before that can happen.
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
Usually it's when I go to my desk and open my computer. That's when all of the emails, texts, and notifications pour in and I get into full on work mode.
