Before tackling the day, Ashley enjoys some quiet time to write and drink coffee in the mornings.
“I'm so sad to see the last sip of coffee in my cup go but I think that’s the thing that reminds me that it’s time to tackle the day.”
§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
I LOVE bed time. I usually head to bed around 9-10. Generally, I fall asleep about an hour after that while watching Friends from College, 30 Rock or The Office. I try and wake up while the rest of the house still sleeps - about 6:30 and get a bit of writing in before then.
§ What do you dream about?
Last night someone stole my phone while I was right there and I booked the wrong flight to Mumbai.
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
Okay, I’ll be real honest; I check my phone. I like to say it’s my way to sort of casually wake up. I do a quick social media check but lately, that’s been getting less and less and I’ve been spending more time talking to my friends on the other side of the pond on the app Marco Polo. Then, when I’m ready to get out of bed, I start my Bialetti percolating.
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
Coffee. Seriously. It helps me get out bed. This summer I’ve been fighting the urge to go right to my computer with my cup. Instead, I’ll take it outside in the sun and drink it with the birds.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
Currently (summer) it’s my husband, dog, and my kids. In the Fall when the house goes back to its regularly scheduled programming it’ll be just me and the dog.
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
Usually nothing. I don’t get hungry until about 11. Then my favorite is a thick slice of toast, crisped in my cast iron with a healthy amount of butter, capped with almond butter and peaches, or freshly roasted plum jam, or ricotta and tomatoes. Or softly scrambled eggs laced with grassy olive oil.
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
I generally use Stumptown beans brewed in my 6 cup Bialetti.
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
A real nice espresso machine.
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
You know, that’s a great question. I’m not sure I’ve thought of that before. I’m so sad to see the last sip of coffee in my cup go but I think that’s the thing that reminds me that it’s time to tackle the day.
