Curator's Notes

We’re excited to share our very first Vietnamese coffee with you: the dark and delicious Opal Bold, new from artisan roaster Fundamental. This cup is delicate, but robust, with an aroma of sweet brown sugar and fragrant cedar, a toasty body like malty dark beer, and a clean finish with a hint of tobacco and cracked pepper. Spicy like an Indonesian and smooth like a Hawaiian, this classic Vietnamese cup is a real delight for dark roast lovers.

Roaster's Notes

Opal Bold comes from Mercafe Lotus Farm Cluster in Dalat, located in the central highlands of Vietnam. Coffee has been cultivated in this region since the 1850s, and has fertile volcanic soil with cool temperatures, perfect for coffee. This cup is earthy and spicy, with notes of cigar box, cedar, soft acidity, and a good body to round it out. A complex, delicious cup.

"First tried this as pour-over. I'm not too clear on what 'malt' is meant to taste like but it puts me in mind of a malted shake or milk balls and that is not present here. The overwhelming flavor is very akin to Guinness, very stout-beer-ish. Highly bitter pour-over, took a good dose of milk and sugar. The cedar comes through in a French-pressed cup along with a much tamer stout taste. I actually drank the french press cup black. Much more balance. Immersion brew is the way here. Coarse grind, french press, four minutes, 1:12 ratio. "
